TotalEnergies and the United States: A Multi-Energy Story

Feature

Operating in the United States since 1957, TotalEnergies is focused on identifying opportunities to meet growing energy needs of the country while reducing its emissions. In more than 30 U.S. states, the Company is developing an integrated portfolio combining 25 GW of low-carbon power generation assets, storage projects and trading activities. It is also America’s leading exporter of LNG, an essential complement to offset the intermittent nature of renewable energies. Below is an overview of our multi-energy activities in the United States.

Natural gas and biogas

TotalEnergies, the leading exporter of American LNG

In the United States, TotalEnergies is active in natural gas liquefaction:

  • in Louisiana, through its 16.6% stake in the Cameron LNG plant;
  • in Texas, through the development of the Rio Grande LNG project;
  • via contracts to purchase LNG with the main LNG terminals in the United States.

These positions rank the Company as the leading exporter of American LNG since 2021, with a volume of more than 10 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), which has enabled us to contribute to the energy supply to the European continent in these times of gas crisis. By 2030, we are aiming to have an American LNG export capacity in excess of 15 MTPA.

In North America, we are also involved in LNG in Mexico, in the state of Baja California, through our 16.6% stake in the Energia Costa Azul LNG liquefaction plant.

Natural gas

In Fort Worth, Texas, TotalEnergies operates the Barnett gas field, where the Company is implementing its global commitment to reduce methane emissions by 80% by 2030 compared with 2020.

Biogas

TotalEnergies is developing biomethane production in the United States. Since 2021, we have been working with Clean Energy to accelerate the development of this sector in the United States, to meet the growing demand for renewable natural gas in vehicle fleets. We provide our expertise in the production of biomethane at the Friona (Texas) site, which is then distributed by Clean Energy through its retail network of service stations.
